FREE Brooklyn Cultural District Walking Tours - May

Saturday, May 5, 2018 - 11:00am

The Brooklyn "Cultural District" is growing: with the recent openings of the sparkling new Theatre for a New Audience and the BRIC Arts Center, along with the expansive Gotham Market and other destination restaurants on Fulton Street, the promise of a major new cultural district in Brooklyn is finally being realized. But beyond the new, are established institutions that have excelled here for years: from the Irondale Ensemble, to MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts); from BAM Harvey to Greenlight Bookstore to Spike Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks.

*NOTE: There are TWO tours on May 5; one at 11am, and one at 3pm. They are the exact same in route and content; we're offering a second tour to accomodate guests of the ART360 / FORT GREENE event.

Come join this free 2 hour guided walking tour co-presented by FAB Alliance and American Opera Projects on Saturday, May 5, to experience the old, the new, and what's to come! Learn how this concentration of venues and people is shifting the cultural landscape of the borough and the city, while you discover the surprising historical core: a flourishing Fulton Street arts center, of more than a century ago. Over 120 minutes, you'll stroll through the gorgeous brownstone-dotted streets of Fort Greene, past both spontaneous and commissioned street art, to see where more than a dozen spaces and locations have already made the Brooklyn Cultural District a major arts destination for performances of every type, large and small.

The tour stops at several historical Brooklyn locations.

Tour Leader Dr. Ron Janoff is a licensed tour guide, a professor of Classics, Coordinator of the Rockwell Place Community Garden in the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, and a long-time Fort Greene resident. He has led walking tours of Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 25 years.

The Brooklyn Cultural District tours on May 5 are also listed Jane's Walk tours! The tours are free, but space is limited and advance registration is required; CLICK HERE TO REGISTER for the first tour at 11am. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER for the second tour at 3pm. The groups will meet at 11am and at 3pm at the large, open plaza area near the digital BAM marquee sign at Flatbush and Lafayette Aves. Future 2018 tour dates: June 10, July 7.
